Finally we got to perform sampling for 3Bvent . We've collected biological and environmental samples for bacterial metagenomics and seawater physical chemical parameters, and we have also deployed recruitment plates across all our study sites.

This month, our project was referred in a regional newspaper, Correio dos Açores and on the Faculty of Sciences and Tecnology newsletter.

A new member has joined the team. Beatriz Lorente comes from Spain. She studied Marine Sciences at Cadiz University (UCA) and owns a Master’s degree in Biodiversity by the University of Barcelona (UB). She has worked in Marine botany as a research assistant in the Azorean Biodiversity Group within the ASPAZOR project and as a Biology Specialist for macroalgae cultivation in the R&D department of AQUAZOR. She has experience in fieldwork, both intertidal and subtidal levels, sorting and identification of marine species, molecular lab techniques and aquaculture methods.

Her work within 3Bvent will be mostly dedicated to Task 5 - Biotechnological applications: antimicrobial activities, relevant enzymes and metabolites. Briefly, Beatriz will isolate and grow bacteria associated with macroalgae from CO2 vents and test their antimicrobial activities and enzymatic potential.
